How to Update Your Address in DEERS for Army ID Card Renewal

An Australian postal address can be recorded in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System, but updating DEERS does not automatically replace a physical Army identification card. The change updates your official record; a separate appointment may still be required to renew your Common Access Card.

This process applies to eligible U.S. Army personnel and sponsored dependents. Australian Defence Force membership alone does not create access to DEERS. Australian users should follow milConnect prompts carefully because its American labels and address fields differ from familiar postcode and suburb conventions.

Why the DEERS record matters

DEERS holds information used for military eligibility, personnel administration, benefits, identification and official correspondence. A current address helps ensure that documents reach the right person and that Army systems use consistent personal information.

A sponsor should also review every dependent’s address. Changing the sponsor’s profile may not update a spouse, child or other enrolled family member. Keep identity records guidance as a secondary reference, while treating milConnect and the servicing ID card office as the controlling sources.

Update the address in milConnect

Sign in to milConnect through its official website or application, then locate the profile, personal information or addresses area. The exact menu labels can vary by account type, but you are looking for the option to add or edit a residential or mailing address.

Enter the new address according to its purpose. A physical residence, a mailing address and an email or telephone contact are separate categories in many profiles. Saving a new email address may therefore leave the DEERS residence unchanged, or the reverse may occur.

Review the complete address before submitting it, then save the change and retain any confirmation screen or reference number. If the profile belongs to a sponsor, repeat the process for each dependent whose address has changed.

Format an Australian address correctly

Australian addresses commonly place the street number before the street name. Include any unit, apartment or flat number clearly, followed by the suburb, state or territory and four-digit postcode. Australians normally say “postcode” rather than “ZIP code,” and DEERS may use American terminology.

For example, a private address might include “17 Example Street, Unit 4,” followed by “Surry Hills NSW 2010, Australia.” Use the full state name when the field permits it, or follow the exact abbreviation requested by milConnect. Keep the leading zero in postcodes such as 0800 for Darwin or 2000 for Canberra.

Select Australia as the country rather than forcing the address into a U.S. state field. An Australian Post Office Box can be entered as a mailing address when the form has a dedicated field for it. Do not use an APO or AE address for a private Australian residence; those codes belong to the U.S. military postal system.

Confirm the change reached the system

After saving, reopen the address section and check every line for spelling and postcode accuracy. Some DEERS and identification databases update on different schedules, so milConnect may show the new address before every downstream Army system does. Allow several business days before attending an appointment that depends on the change.

If milConnect cannot be opened, returns an error or prevents an expired CAC holder from signing in, milConnect access troubleshooting explains several connection and certificate problems. Avoid creating a second account, because duplicate profiles can complicate record matching.

Arrange the physical ID card visit

Updating DEERS does not itself produce a new CAC. Search for an “Army ID Card Office” serving your duty location, or ask the personnel section which facility can renew your card. Some offices require an appointment or cannot correct certain enrollment issues themselves.

Bring your expired card if available, government-issued photo identification, proof of the new address and the milConnect confirmation. A dependent may also need documentation establishing the relationship to the Army sponsor. Requirements differ overseas, so ask the servicing office which originals or certified copies it accepts.

At the appointment, verify that your details are correct before the card is produced or activated. Check the expiration date, security features and issuing information, and keep the new card secure because it provides access to many military and government systems.

Resolve access and record problems

An error saying that an address is invalid may reflect a required field left blank, an unsupported country value or inconsistent state formatting. Retype the record rather than repeatedly saving small corrections, and compare it with the prompts in the same milConnect screen.

For an unresolved enrollment problem, contact DEERS using its current official telephone options or speak with an Army ID card office or personnel representative. Have your service information, milConnect reference and old and new addresses ready. Do not rely on informal contact details found in social media groups.

A missing service document can create a separate identity-verification issue even when your address update is correct. If that is the obstacle, this lost DD-214 replacement guide explains the recovery process for a DD-214 held without a copy.

Practical steps for a reliable renewal

Work in a fixed order: update DEERS, confirm the saved record, wait for connected systems to refresh and then attend the ID card appointment. This separates an enrollment problem from an identification-card problem and prevents unnecessary repeat visits.

Before travelling to an office, review the result once more from a different device if possible. Pay particular attention to the country, postcode, mailing-address type and dependent information.

  • Record residential, mailing and contact details separately.
  • Follow Australian postcode and suburb conventions.
  • Save confirmation details for the DEERS submission.
  • Verify dependent profiles when acting as an Army sponsor.
  • Bring the required identity and relationship documents to the ID card office.
